Philosophy

Photography for me is about seeing. The essence of a scene or object exists on multiple levels of perception and embodiment. It is a miraculous visual stage with which I can interact and through the photographic medium, bring the recording of that interaction to other eyes. There is a magical force that is made apparent when I allow a subject to show me what it is rather than what I think it ought to be. My hope is for the viewer to 'see' with that magic too. I am often drawn to
a specific vantage point in time and space when I quiet my mind and allow
my spirit to listen to the world. The harmonies I see in natural landscapes
parallel the landscapes of mind and spirit, from which the
cycle of life is revealed. |

I
work with large format (4 x 5 view camera) or 35mm (SLR), in color
transparencies and direct digital. Photographs are produced on Fuji Crystal
Archive, a state of the art photographic medium widely recognized for its
rich and saturated color quality, archival dye permanence, and luminosity.
Additionally, prints are produced with the GiclÈe process using the Epson
2200 with archival quality pigment inks on 100% cotton Fine Art papers.

Background
|
I
first became enamored with the magic of photography at the age of six as
my grandfathers assistant - coating Polaroid photographs from family gatherings
and vacations. My love of photography has never left me. My work has been
exhibited nationwide in galleries and alternative spaces. My formal education
was in photography at the California Institute of the Arts (BFA) where I
had the opportunity to work with Roger Conrad, Al Weber and other notable
photographers. The highlight of that education was meeting with Wynn Bullock,
whose spirit and acute perception of the world left an indelible impression
on me. I have over the past years made a living as a graphic designer and
professional photographer while raising a family with my wife Denise. |
